Any Pastor with a desire to bring video projection to their church has had to answer the question, “Why do we need videos in church?” During a church business meeting, someone may make this observation, “Hasn’t the church fulfilled its mission for centuries WITHOUT the use of video. Why do we need it now?”

 

And that is a great observation because the church should always keep its purpose in mind. We should never add something to our ministry simply for the sake of “change” or because “other churches are doing it”.

However, in the case of video, I can think of many reasons it can be used to help the church achieve its purpose. Let me just share a few of those with you:

 

o   It speaks the language of the culture in which we are trying to spread the gospel. In the same way that a missionary must be able to speak the native language of a people group to tell them about Christ – video speaks the language of our society. Using video says to people visiting the church that, “We have a message that is RELEVANT to your life.”

 

o   To use video is to teach like Christ. When we use video, we are following the example Jesus left for us. He used parables (earthly stories) to teach and communicate Kingdom Principles. Video is the ultimate storyteller…combining visual imagery and sound.

 

o   Max Lucado said, “It is a sin to bore people with the Gospel.” I agree! And video can help the Pastor present the message more creatively. Also, many studies have shown that using visual media to reinforce a message can increase retention by over 50%.

 

o   It moves the emotional side of us. God created us as intellectual and emotional beings. I think a great example is the movie “The Passion of the Christ”. Even though I already KNEW (intellectually) everything presented in the movie – it still had the power (emotionally) to compel me to a deeper commitment to Christ.

 

o   GOOD QUALITY video production represents Christ and the church well. It says, “We are a quality, class-act organization.” Everything the church does should be done with excellence!
